The above plane was originally called the "Candy Bomber". Notice the name change on the aircraft. The Americans dropped little parachutes with Hershey bars to the German children during the Berlin Airlift. While stationed at Rhein-Main Chuck Ricks visited the Luftbrucke Memorial & viewed the plane. He was starting a new band after leaving Brainstorm. The aircraft provided inspiration & he decided to call his new band Candy Bomber. Their first gig was immediately after B-Flt's last mid shift just across the Autobahn A-5 & was credited with "Waking up the whole damn campground".

A sad site for those who were stationed here in the 80's. Looking like a ghost town with the Luftbrucke Memorial empty and where are the protestors who were always outside the Luftbrucke gate? Still, embrace your memories of Rhein-Main Air Base - for it is no longer there. MSgt David Smith emailed this office on 11May08 and wrote, " I was recently TDY to the states and when I returned through Frankfurt international. I looked across the runway at Rhein-Main and the only thing standing were the old Hotel (now a new one) and the new hangers built in 1992. The rest of the base was totally leveled."
