Robert Zamora's remarks reminded me of the fact that I'd done some reconnaissance on the old Feldberg Relay Site about a year ago. Upon entering the inconspicuous path leading to the site, the Germans have now posted this nice plaque as a reminder of the decades long "friendly occupation" of the Sandplacken mountain.
And here it is... the antenna that I can see in good weather even from my hometown 15 miles south of Frankfurt. When we investigated an incident up there in 1992, the 1945th Communications Squadron folks let us climb up to the first platform. A very impressive view of Frankfurt from up there!
And here's the famous gate shack where our folks pulled many quiet mid shifts protecting "The Rock"…unfortunately, the barracks building that used to house Feldberg personnel, which was situated right behind the gate shack, has been torn down. The site transferred from Rhein-Main to Ramstein's communications squadron in April 1995...
...Due to ever increasing digital communication technology and the shrinking US military presence in the region, the site was soon abandoned. It did however play a vital communication role during the Cold War. I remember seeing all those thick com wires running through the "Black Forest Building" during some visits of the site in the late Eighties. Very impressive!
The giant antenna from a different angle.
Here is part of the perimeter wall of the now abandoned site.
