Update On Sgt Chuck Ricks (abridged) |
If you live in the continental
U.S., you can call my cell on most Saturdays (preferably 0900
PST). Ask your base operator for an outside line & dial 503-750-6525.
Looking forward to hearing from you again. |
I left Rhein Main in Oct 89 as a buck sergeant
(remember those?). Looking back, it was in many ways the best
of times. Perhaps it was the location, our mission & those
moments in history which make everything about it seem more
special than any other assignment. I was never good at keeping
in touch with letters. It seems email was definitely invented
for me. So when you find this site & email, I promise to
reply.
After three years at Rhein-Main, I did an almost three year
special duty assignment as cadre member (prison guard) AF Det
assigned to the 42nd MP Battalion Ft. Lvn, KS. After that I
got married en-route to Davis-Monthan AFB, AZ where we spent
the last three years of my military career. I was a certified
Law Enforcement Shift Chief.
After PCSing (Permanent Civilian Status) as a SSgt late Aug95,
I did a very short stint in Yamhill Co. Sheriff's Office. They
kept sending me home after 18-19 hrs. This way they didn't have
to pay any benefits. But they wanted me available 24/7, always
"on-call". I couldn't support a wife & child on
$425 per month. As much fun as it was to be the friendly neighborhood
fuzz, My wife suggested I go back to what I did before the Air
Force. You can read all about that at www.wallpaperpro.com
I married the woman of my dreams & we have three beautiful
children. Based in Newberg, OR we live in the famous wine country
of the Willamette Valley, southwest of Portland. This Quaker
town is now world renown thanks to the '07 comedy "Are
We Done Yet?". The movie characters drove north out of
Portland along a river which would have put them in Washington
state. They called it "Newberg County" and used our
trash & recycling cans for the film. But this is actually
Yamhill County. As a running gag, they made Newberg famous for
it's sturgeon (and you guessed it... we're not). *If
you watched the '08 finale of The Amazing Race, you saw a little
bit of Newberg when the finalists had to dash from Portland
International Airport to Newberg. One unlucky team got the taxi
driver who had never heard of Newberg. Are you kidding me?
Over the years things have a funny way of disappearing. Does
anyone have a video tape of those hilarious AFN commercials?
Some personal favorites are the Grill Sergeant, Energy Rapper,
OPSEC/COMSEC series and of course "Life... Be in it!".
Still playing guitar & have a small home studio. Occasionally,
I'll do live sound production for the Newberg Relay for Life
or Newberg Chamber of Commerce Tunes on Tuesday. I own Beaver
Trax Studios & front my own band from time to time. Most
of the mementos I have from the Air Force are in the car hole.
My briefcase is still stocked with all the forms that were current
when I left my last base. It seems like only yesterday when
I was a cop. I miss it a lot at times.
The last dispatch of my Air Force career wasn't anything dramatic.
It was late afternoon 07Jul95 on a swing shift when I responded
to the base hospital. There I met one of our K-9 troops (in
civvies) who was being treated for injuries sustained a couple
days prior when he and his MWD responded to an incident in base
housing. To make a long story short, he was attacked by the
resident's pet cat. He was so embarrassed, he didn't want to
report it. But the subsequent infections now forced him to seek
treatment at the hospital. Not much of an investigation. I saw
no reason to bring the cat in for questioning or pursue apprehension
for assault on Security Policeman. The blotter entry was made
but I never found out if the CSP or base commander giggled or
laughed at "SP Assaulted By Pussy"? Case
closed.
To be continued...
