I left the Rhein on 12Oct86 after
spending a wonderful 3½ years. It was simply the best time
of my life! Upon out-processing at Charleston, I enlisted in the
Air Force Reserve and was assigned to the 94th Security Police Squadron,
Dobbins ARB (Marietta, GA). I came back to my hometown of Cordele,
GA and was hired by the Postal Service in Americus, GA(30 Miles
away). The Post Office kept me gainfully employed until the mobilization
of September 2001. While I was assigned the 94th SPS, we did two
annual tours to Rhein-Main. The last one was in 1992 and the memories
from that trip were really depressing. Our old Bldg 343 had deteriorated
significantly during the draw down. i.e. peeling paint, ruined carpets,
blown out lights etc. The Squadron photos and trophies from the
late 70’s early 80’s had disappeared or been thrown
away. Ingo Rautenkrantz and a few of the old timers were still there
and they seemed quite downcast. It was quite a shock from the “good
old days”. I left the 94th SFS as a SMSgt (Flight Sergeant)
and moved over to the 22nd Air Force (Dobbins ARB) and served there
on the Security Forces staff until 2005. When my September 11th
tour was completed, I transferred from the Post Office to a Air
Reserve Technician (ART) position at the 22nd AF. In 2005, I was
asked to take a Active Guard Reserve (AGR) billet at the Air Force
Reserve Command HQ at Robins AFB GA. I retired from Civil Service
and will finish out my active duty time here at Robins in 2017.
I’ve been lucky enough to have managed to
live in Cordele throughout my career. I married my wife Carol
in 1990. Along with her came a stepson. Troy Hanford flew down
from Washington state and served as my best man. That’s
another story on its own!
